Core FAQs

31 questions

The most common questions about cost, safety, installation and Florida requirements.

Cost & Value

How much does an automatic pool cover cost?
Most professionally installed automatic pool covers cost approximately $15,000 to $25,000, while large or highly customized projects can exceed $30,000. Pool size and shape, track style, new construction versus retrofit installation, deck modifications, electrical work and finish options all affect the final price. Protected Pools provides a project-specific proposal after reviewing the pool and installation conditions.
Is an automatic pool cover worth the investment in Florida?
For many Florida homeowners, yes. An automatic cover adds a strong layer of protection while reducing evaporation, heat loss, chemical consumption and debris. Because it opens and closes quickly, owners are more likely to cover the pool consistently. The value is greatest for families concerned about safety, homeowners who heat their pools and anyone who wants less day-to-day cleaning.
Do automatic pool covers include a warranty?
Yes, but warranty terms vary by manufacturer and component. Fabric, motors, mechanisms, batteries, electronics and labor may each have different coverage periods and exclusions. The warranty may exclude damage caused by incorrect water chemistry, low water level, standing water, debris, misuse or lack of maintenance. Homeowners should review the project proposal and manufacturer warranty together.
Is financing available for an automatic pool cover?
Yes. Protected Pools offers financing options for qualifying new-pool and retrofit projects through its financing partner. The lender determines terms, approval, rates and payment amounts. Homeowners can request a cover proposal first and then compare financing with other payment options.

Safety Basics

Are automatic pool covers safe for children and pets?
An ASTM F1346-compliant safety cover creates a substantial barrier over the water when it is fully closed, properly maintained and used as directed. It can help reduce accidental access by children and pets, but it is only one layer of protection. No cover replaces responsible adult supervision, secure access controls, alarms or other safeguards appropriate for the property.
Can you walk on an automatic pool cover?
A properly installed ASTM-compliant safety cover supports significant weight in an emergency. However, owners should never treat it as a patio, walkway or play surface. Cover-Pools specifically advises owners not to walk or play on the cover except in an emergency. The housing lid may also have different load limits than the cover itself.
What does ASTM F1346 mean for a pool cover?
ASTM F1346 is the recognized performance standard for safety covers used on pools, spas and hot tubs. It addresses requirements such as load performance, access prevention, drainage and labeling. Only documented, compliant products and configurations should carry the safety-cover label. A solar blanket, floating slatted cover or decorative cover is not automatically an ASTM safety cover.

Regulations & Weather

Does an automatic safety cover meet Florida pool-safety requirements?
Florida Statutes Chapter 515 lists an approved safety pool cover meeting ASTM F1346-91 as one of the permitted safety-feature options for a new residential pool. Local governments can adopt equal or more stringent requirements, and the local building official has final authority. Protected Pools coordinates product documentation, but homeowners and builders should confirm approval for the specific project and jurisdiction.
Does an automatic safety cover eliminate the need for a pool fence?
Not in every situation. Florida law recognizes an approved safety cover as one possible safety feature for qualifying new residential pools, but local ordinances, HOA rules, property conditions and project type may require additional barriers. Some municipalities apply stricter rules. Homeowners and builders should always confirm the final requirement with the local building department before construction or permit closeout.
Should the pool cover be open or closed during a hurricane?
There is no universal hurricane position for every cover system. The correct preparation depends on the product, installation, expected wind and the manufacturer's written instructions. Owners should contact Protected Pools before the storm, remove loose objects and debris, verify drainage and pump operation where applicable, and never operate the cover during dangerous wind or lightning.

Fitting an Existing Pool

Can an automatic pool cover be installed on an existing pool?
Yes. You can retrofit many existing pools with an automatic cover. Deck-mounted systems such as Coverseal™ are specifically suited to many existing rectangular, freeform and irregularly shaped pools. Protected Pools evaluates the pool shape, available deck space, raised features, drainage, deck condition and access before recommending the correct system.
Can an automatic cover be installed on a freeform pool?
Often, yes, although the appropriate system depends on the pool layout. Traditional track-guided covers travel in a straight path and may require a rectangular cover opening around the pool. Systems such as Coverseal can accommodate many freeform and irregular shapes. A site review identifies obstructions, slopes and the best track location.
What is the best automatic cover for an existing pool?
There is no single best system for every existing pool. Coverseal is frequently a strong retrofit choice because it installs on the surrounding deck and can work with many pool shapes. Other options, including a traditional track cover, a sliding deck or a slatted system, may be better for certain layouts, budgets or design goals. Protected Pools recommends a system only after reviewing the pool.

Compatibility & Design

Can an automatic cover be used on a saltwater pool?
Yes, automatic covers work on saltwater pools, but correct chemistry and regular cleaning are especially important. Salt residue and concentrated sanitizer can affect metal components and fabric over time. The salt system may need reduced output while the cover is on, and owners should keep the cover open after shock or high-dose treatment until the water is safe and balanced.
What is the difference between an under-deck and deck-mounted pool cover?
An under-deck system fits into the pool structure during design, largely concealing the mechanism, tracks and cover box. It is most easily incorporated during new construction. A deck-mounted system installs on top of the existing deck and is often the practical choice for a retrofit. Appearance, cost, construction scope and compatible pool shapes differ between the two approaches.
Can the cover mechanism and tracks be hidden?
Yes, especially when owners plan the system before building a new pool. Installers can place the cover mechanism in a recessed housing, integrate tracks into the pool design and coordinate the lid with the coping or deck. Existing pools may still have attractive retrofit options, but the tracks and housing are generally more visible.

Design, Timeline & Service Area

How long does automatic pool-cover installation take?
Installation time depends on whether the cover is part of new construction or a retrofit, the pool size, system type, deck conditions and required electrical or construction work. The final cover installation itself may take only a few days, but measurements, engineering, manufacturing and coordination occur beforehand. Homeowners should order custom systems well before the desired completion date.
Are automatic pool covers custom-made?
Yes. Protected Pools selects and fabricates the cover, tracks and related components around the pool dimensions, system type and site conditions. Accurate measurements are essential. Protected Pools considers pool shape, deck elevations, coping, raised walls, spas, water features and obstructions before ordering the system.
What colors and finish options are available?
Available colors and finish options depend on the product. Traditional cover fabrics come in multiple colors, while housings, tracks, lids and sliding-deck edge trim may offer coordinated finish choices. Installers can integrate some lid designs with the surrounding coping or deck. Protected Pools provides current samples during design and quoting.
What areas of Florida does Protected Pools serve?
Protected Pools operates out of Stuart, Florida and primarily serves the lower half of Florida for Cover-Pools systems, with broader availability for selected Cover Dream products and projects. Service availability depends on the product, project size and location. Submit the property address and requested cover type so the team can confirm coverage and travel requirements. Contact us for All of your cover needs regardless of location and we may be able to help you connect with other cover specialist around the country.

Efficiency & Savings

Does a pool cover reduce water evaporation?
Yes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that pool covers can prevent up to 95 percent of evaporation when used consistently and appropriately. Actual savings depend on how completely and how often owners cover the pool, as well as wind, temperature, humidity and pool size. Reduced evaporation also means less frequent refilling and less loss of treated water.
Can an automatic pool cover reduce heating costs?
Yes. Evaporation is a major source of heat loss from a pool. By covering the water when the pool is not in use, a solid cover helps retain heat and reduces heater run time. EPA guidance indicates that solid covers on heated pools can save approximately 50 to 70 percent of pool-heating costs when used consistently, although actual results vary.
Will a pool cover reduce chemical use?
Usually. A cover limits evaporation, sunlight and debris, which can reduce chemical loss and contamination. Because a covered pool behaves differently from an uncovered pool, chemical feeders and service routines may need adjustment to prevent over-chlorination. The cover should remain open after shock treatment or chemical addition until the water has returned to a safe, properly balanced range.

Debris, Rain & Operation

Will an automatic pool cover keep leaves and debris out?
A solid cover keeps most leaves, insects and windblown debris out of the pool while closed. Owners should remove debris sitting on the cover before retracting it so it doesn't fall into the cover box or pool. Fine dust and rainwater may still require periodic cleaning depending on the system.
What happens to rainwater on an automatic pool cover?
Traditional solid automatic covers use an automatic cover pump to remove accumulated rainwater. Owners should place the pump on the cover whenever the cover is on and connect it exactly as the manufacturer directs. Never retract a traditional fabric cover while water is sitting on it. Coverseal uses a tensioned, self-draining membrane and does not require a cover pump.
How quickly does an automatic pool cover open and close?
Most automatic systems cover or uncover a residential pool in less than a minute, depending on pool length and model. The operator must maintain a clear view of the entire pool while the cover is moving and stop immediately if a person, pet, object, water accumulation or unusual resistance is present.
Does an automatic pool cover require electricity?
Traditional automatic systems use an electric motor and require properly planned power, bonding and controls. The design may require a dedicated circuit or other electrical work. Cover pumps generally require a GFCI-protected outlet. Some products, including automatic Coverseal configurations, use rechargeable batteries and solar charging. Electrical work must follow manufacturer instructions and applicable code.

Maintenance & Lifespan

How long does an automatic pool-cover system last?
The mechanism can provide many years of service when it is professionally installed, operated correctly and maintained regularly. Fabric, ropes or cables, pulleys, gliders, motors and other wear components may need repair or replacement at different intervals. Florida sun, heat, coastal conditions, water chemistry and frequency of use all influence service life.
How long does automatic pool-cover fabric last?
Traditional automatic-cover fabric often lasts approximately five to eight years, but actual life varies widely. Proper water chemistry, keeping standing water and debris off the cover, cleaning the tracks, maintaining the correct pool-water level and avoiding unnecessary foot traffic can extend fabric life. Intense Florida sun, chemical buildup and neglected maintenance can shorten it.
How often should an automatic pool cover be serviced in Florida?
Protected Pools recommends professional service every six to twelve months in Florida, depending on use, debris, exposure and system condition. Routine service can identify worn ropes, cables, pulleys, gliders, loose hardware, track contamination and drainage problems before they cause a larger failure. Owners should also perform regular visual checks between professional visits.
How much maintenance does an automatic pool cover require?
Routine care includes removing water and debris before opening the cover, keeping tracks and the cover box clean, maintaining proper pool-water level, monitoring water chemistry and watching for uneven movement, unusual noises or fabric damage. Professional maintenance should include inspection, cleaning, adjustment and lubrication appropriate to the specific system.

Existing Pool & Coverseal

14 questions

Retrofitting an automatic cover onto an existing pool, and how Coverseal fits freeform and irregular shapes.

What Coverseal Is & Where It Fits

What is a Coverseal pool cover?
Coverseal is a premium automatic cover that travels along low-profile tracks installed around the pool deck. Its reinforced membrane stretches tightly over the pool when closed, creating a clean appearance, strong protection and a self-draining surface. It is frequently selected for existing pools because it can accommodate many shapes without requiring a traditional recessed cover box.
Can Coverseal be installed on an existing pool?
Yes. Coverseal is specifically well suited to many existing pools. The system installs on the surrounding deck, so owners can often add it without rebuilding the entire pool. Protected Pools reviews the deck structure, slope, condition, access, pool shape and nearby obstacles before approving installation.
Can Coverseal fit a freeform or irregular pool?
Coverseal can accommodate almost any pool shape or size within the product's engineering limits. Certain conditions can prevent installation, including concave deck areas, deck slopes toward the pool, excessive slopes or deck structures that cannot securely support the tracks. Protected Pools reviews photos, measurements and site conditions before confirming fit.
What pool-deck surfaces can support Coverseal?
Coverseal can be installed on many stable deck surfaces, including properly constructed concrete and certain wood or composite decks. The surface must provide secure anchoring and long-term stability. Hollow materials, excessive slopes, weak substrates or damaged decking may require reinforcement or may not be suitable. Protected Pools selects the correct track type after evaluation.
Does installing Coverseal require cutting the pool deck?
Coverseal is generally installed on top of the existing deck and does not require the extensive recessed housing used by a traditional under-deck cover. Some site preparation, anchoring, electrical coordination or localized construction may still be required. The final scope depends on deck condition, drainage, slopes, obstacles and the selected housing configuration.

Power, Control & Safety

Does Coverseal need a rainwater pump?
No. Coverseal uses a tensioned membrane with an engineered slope and drainage openings that allow rainwater to drain instead of collecting in large puddles. That design eliminates the separate cover pump required on traditional solid automatic-cover fabric. The drainage openings and tracks must still be kept clean.
How is an automatic Coverseal powered?
Automatic Coverseal models use rechargeable batteries and can be configured with solar charging. Indoor or low-sunlight applications may require an alternate charging arrangement. Exact power requirements depend on the selected model and site. Protected Pools confirms the charging and control configuration during design.
Can Coverseal be controlled by a smartphone?
Current automatic Coverseal models may support smartphone control. For safety, the operator must remain close enough to maintain a clear, direct view of the cover and pool during movement. Owners should never use remote operation when they cannot fully observe the pool.
Can Coverseal be opened manually if the battery fails?
Yes. Coverseal provides a manual override procedure for power or battery failure. The override is intended for exceptional situations, not routine use. Owners should follow the model-specific instructions supplied at installation or contact Protected Pools rather than forcing the housing or membrane.
Is Coverseal safe to walk on?
Coverseal is engineered to provide protection in the event of an accidental fall, and limited careful access may be permitted for cleaning as described by the manufacturer. It is not a patio, bench, diving platform or play surface. Owners should avoid walking on it unless necessary, and should do so only with flat, soft-soled footwear under the manufacturer's guidance.

Maintenance & Cost

Can Coverseal work around raised walls, spas or water features?
Careful design can accommodate many features, including certain raised walls, attached spas and obstacles. Available lifts, track configurations and reduced-overhang options may help clear specific conditions. Feasibility depends on the exact geometry, deck elevations and how the membrane travels, so photos and an on-site evaluation are normally required.
How much maintenance does Coverseal require?
Coverseal does not require a traditional cover pump, but it still needs routine care. Owners should clear tracks and mechanical areas of sand, leaves, branches and dirt. Owners should maintain the normal pool-water level, clean the membrane with appropriate products and inspect the system whenever movement or tension appears abnormal.
How long do the Coverseal membrane and batteries last?
Coverseal reports an average membrane replacement interval of approximately 10 to 12 years and typical automatic-model battery life of approximately four to six years under normal conditions. Extreme heat, coastal sand, heavy use and maintenance practices can change those intervals. These are typical expectations, not guarantees.
How much does Coverseal cost, and can you quote from photos?
Coverseal is a custom premium system, so pricing depends on pool size and shape, deck conditions, access, track selection, housing configuration and options. Initial photos, a property address and basic pool measurements can help determine whether the project appears feasible. Final pricing requires verified measurements and confirmation of site conditions.

New Pool Construction

12 questions

Planning an automatic cover into a new pool build, from design through installation.

Planning & Design

When should an automatic cover be planned for a new pool?
Owners should plan the cover during the earliest pool-design stage, before finalizing the shell, coping, deck, drainage and electrical layout. Early coordination gives the homeowner the best chance of achieving hidden tracks, a concealed mechanism and a lid that integrates cleanly with the pool design.
Can Protected Pools work directly with the pool builder or architect?
Yes. Protected Pools works with homeowners, pool builders, architects and designers to coordinate dimensions, cover-box details, tracks, drainage, bonding, power and construction sequencing. Clear responsibility between trades is important because the cover must integrate with the pool structure and finished deck.
What is an under-deck automatic pool cover?
An under-deck system places the mechanism in a recessed housing at one end of the pool and integrates the tracks into or beneath the pool edge. When the cover is open, the design conceals the fabric and much of the hardware. This approach provides the cleanest appearance but requires careful planning and construction coordination.
Can a hidden automatic cover be installed on a freeform new pool?
A traditional automatic cover can often protect a freeform pool, but it still travels in a straight track path. The pool may need to fit within a rectangular cover opening, and raised features cannot interfere with the fabric. Alternative systems such as Coverseal or a sliding deck may provide more flexibility for certain designs.

Construction Details

Can the cover-box lid match the pool coping or deck?
Often, yes. Several lid approaches are available, including aluminum lids and tray-style systems designed to accept compatible coping or deck finishes. The final choice depends on structural support, access for service, material weight and the pool-builder's details. The lid must remain removable and safe.
What drainage is required for the cover box?
A recessed cover box needs reliable drainage so rainwater, splash-out and groundwater do not remain around the motor and mechanism. Builders must coordinate drain location, size and discharge before construction. Drains must remain accessible and free of debris throughout the life of the system.
What electrical and bonding work is required?
Requirements depend on the system, but traditional automatic covers normally require power for the motor and code-compliant bonding of applicable metal components. A GFCI-protected outlet is typically needed for the cover pump. The builder and licensed electrical contractor should follow the manufacturer drawings and local code.
Can an automatic cover work with an attached spa, sun shelf or water feature?
Sometimes. Designers must plan features so they do not obstruct the straight travel path or create unsafe gaps. Raised spas, walls, waterfalls, handrails, slides and other elements require special review. Builders can reposition or lower some features, isolate them outside the cover path, or address them with a different cover system.

Timeline & Approval

At what stage is the automatic cover installed?
Installers add components in stages. Protected Pools coordinates embedded or structural items during shell, beam, coping and deck construction. Installers complete the mechanism, tracks, fabric, controls and final adjustments once the surrounding construction reaches the correct stage. Protected Pools provides project-specific sequencing instructions.
Does the pool need to maintain a specific water level?
Yes. The pool water supports the closed cover and helps it carry loads. Water that is too low can place excessive stress on the fabric, tracks and hardware. Owners and service companies must maintain the manufacturer-specified operating range, especially when the cover is closed for extended periods.
Who handles permits and final safety approval?
Permit responsibility depends on the overall project contract and jurisdiction. Protected Pools supplies relevant product and installation information, while the pool builder or permit holder typically coordinates the primary pool permit and inspection. The local building official decides whether the installed safety features satisfy the approved plans and local requirements.
Can an automatic cover be added after pool construction has started?
Possibly, but the sooner the design is reviewed, the better. Adding a cover after committing the shell, beam, coping or deck may require redesign, visible tracks or construction changes. Send current plans and job-site photos to Protected Pools immediately so the remaining options can be evaluated.

Service & Troubleshooting

17 questions

Troubleshooting help, maintenance guidance and service-plan details for cover owners.

Common Problems

Why won't my automatic pool cover open or close?
Common causes include loss of power, water or debris on the cover, dirty tracks, low pool-water level, an obstruction, a broken rope or cable, alignment problems or a motor/control issue. Stop operating the system if it strains, moves unevenly or makes an unusual noise. Repeatedly cycling the switch can increase damage.
What should I do if the motor runs but the cover does not move?
Release the control immediately and do not keep running the motor. The system may have a broken drive component, rope or cable, a disengaged connection or excessive resistance. Remove visible water and debris only if it can be done safely, then schedule service. Do not attempt internal mechanism repairs without model-specific training.
Why is my pool cover opening or closing crooked?
Rope or cable stretch, track contamination, worn pulleys or gliders, incorrect tension, an obstruction or low water level can all cause uneven travel. Stop before the cover becomes severely skewed or pulls out of the track. A trained technician should inspect and adjust the system.
Why is my automatic cover making a grinding or unusual noise?
Grinding, scraping, repeated popping or a new motor sound can indicate debris, worn components, alignment problems or excessive load. Stop the cover and look for obvious water, debris or obstructions without entering the mechanism area. If the noise continues, leave the cover in a safe position and request service.

Water & Power Issues

Why does my cover stop partway across the pool?
The system may be sensing resistance from water, debris, contaminated tracks, low water level or a damaged component. Remove visible water or debris and try reversing the cover only if the manufacturer instructions allow it. If the problem repeats, stop operation and have the system inspected rather than increasing control limits or forcing movement.
Should the automatic cover pump stay on the cover?
For traditional solid automatic covers, yes. Owners should normally leave the automatic pump on the cover whenever the cover is on, so it can remove rainwater. Owners must place, power and discharge it according to the pump and cover instructions, using the required GFCI protection. Coverseal is self-draining and does not use this type of cover pump.
Can I open the cover with water or debris on it?
No. Remove standing water and significant debris before retracting a traditional fabric cover. Water is extremely heavy and can damage the fabric, tracks, ropes and mechanism. Debris may be carried into the cover box or pool. Standing water is also a drowning hazard, so owners should remove it promptly.
What happens if the pool-water level is too low?
A closed cover relies on the pool water beneath it for support. If the level is too low, normal loads can overstress the fabric, tracks and attachment points. The cover may also travel poorly. Restore the water to the manufacturer-specified range before closing or loading the cover, and investigate unexplained water loss.

Repairs & Fabric Care

Can an automatic pool cover be opened during a power outage?
Some systems have a model-specific manual procedure, but it should not be improvised. Do not force the fabric, disconnect drive components or enter the cover box without proper instructions. Keep the pool secured, consult the owner's manual and contact Protected Pools for guidance if the cover must be manually secured or opened.
Can a torn automatic pool cover be repaired?
Some small holes or tears can be professionally patched if the surrounding fabric is still sound and the damage is in a suitable location. Protected Pools evaluates tears under approximately four inches as possible repair candidates, but size alone does not guarantee repair. Large tears, edge damage or brittle fabric may require replacement.
When should automatic pool-cover fabric be replaced?
Owners should consider replacement when the fabric becomes brittle, cracked, stretched, porous, repeatedly patched, badly stained or damaged near the webbing and leading edge. A technician should also evaluate fabric that no longer travels evenly or safely. Replacement timing depends on condition, not age alone.
How should automatic pool-cover fabric be cleaned?
Remove loose debris, rinse with fresh water and use only manufacturer-approved mild cleaners and a soft brush or cloth. Avoid harsh solvents, abrasive tools and unapproved protectants. Keep runoff and concentrated cleaner out of the pool. Owners should clean tracks, drains and the cover box separately as directed for the system.
How often should the cover tracks be cleaned?
Inspect tracks regularly and rinse or clean them whenever sand, dirt, leaves or other material is visible. Coastal and heavily landscaped properties may need more frequent attention. Dirty tracks increase friction and can accelerate wear on ropes, cables, webbing and gliders.

Service & Support

What is included in Protected Pools' maintenance plans?
The Complete System Maintenance plan includes system maintenance, cover-box debris removal, lubrication of applicable fittings, clutch adjustment when present, hardware tightening and track-system flushing and inspection. The Extended plan adds fabric cleaning, longer labor coverage, priority response, discounts and selected wear-part benefits as described in the current plan terms.
Do you service covers installed by another company?
Protected Pools services Cover-Pools systems and can evaluate certain other automatic-cover systems case by case. Submit the manufacturer, model if known, photos of the mechanism and tracks, the property address and a description of the problem. Parts availability, territory and technician training determine whether service can be accepted.
Is emergency automatic pool-cover service available?
Protected Pools offers expedited 24- to 48-hour response options Monday through Friday when scheduling and location allow. Availability is not guaranteed, travel charges may apply and parts-dependent repairs may require a return visit. Owners should never treat a non-working cover as an active safety barrier until they restore its operation.
What information should I send when requesting service?
Provide the property address, cover brand, approximate age, photos or video of the problem, the current position of the cover and a description of any noise or movement. Note whether the motor runs, whether power is available and whether water or debris is present. This helps the technician prepare and identify likely parts.

Spa & Plunge Covers

12 questions

Cost, safety and options for spa, plunge pool, swim spa and cold plunge covers.

Choosing & Cost

What is the best cover for a spa or plunge pool?
The best choice depends on the spa size, shape, mounting conditions, safety goals, insulation needs, budget and how often the cover will be used. Options include automatic fabric covers, Coverseal, sliding deck systems, lightweight Airframe covers and other manual safety covers. Protected Pools compares the practical tradeoffs after reviewing the spa.
How much does a spa or plunge-pool cover cost?
Pricing varies substantially by type. A custom lightweight manual spa cover costs far less than an automatic, deck-mounted or sliding-deck system. Size, shape, insulation, safety rating, mounting details and finish options all affect price. Photos and dimensions are normally enough to begin the quoting process.
Can an automatic cover be installed on an existing spa?
Often, yes. A track-guided automatic cover or Coverseal may be possible when there is adequate space, a suitable deck and a clear travel path. Protected Pools reviews raised walls, spillways, handrails and attached-pool geometry. If an automatic system is not practical, Protected Pools may recommend a custom manual option.
What is the difference between an automatic and manual spa cover?
An automatic cover offers push-button convenience and is more likely to be closed after every use, but it requires a mechanism, controls, installation space and a larger investment. A manual cover is simpler and more economical but must be light and convenient enough for the owner to handle consistently.

Safety & Airframe

Are spa covers safe for children and pets?
Only a cover specifically documented as meeting the applicable ASTM F1346 safety standard should be presented as a safety cover. Locking straps, strong construction and secure attachment can add protection, but product ratings vary. No spa cover replaces adult supervision or controlled access to the spa area.
Can a cover be made for a round or unusual spa shape?
Yes. Many spa covers are custom fabricated from verified dimensions and templates. Installers must accurately measure curves, clipped corners, raised controls, spillways and other features. The available cover types and safety ratings depend on the shape and how the cover can be supported and secured.
What is an Airframe spa cover?
Airframe is a lightweight, foam-free spa-cover design built around a rigid frame and insulating air chambers. Unlike conventional foam-core covers, it is designed not to absorb water and become progressively heavier. The replaceable outer covering and repairable construction can also extend useful service life when properly maintained.
Is an Airframe cover ASTM safety rated?
Airframe is offered as an ASTM safety-focused spa-cover product, but the exact model, dimensions, locking hardware and installation must match the manufacturer's certified configuration. Protected Pools will identify the applicable certification and operating requirements in the proposal. Owners should never use the cover as a play surface.

Care & Special Uses

Can one person open and close the spa cover?
That depends on the cover type and size. Lightweight manual covers such as Airframe are designed to be easier to handle than waterlogged foam covers, while automatic systems provide the greatest convenience. Larger manual covers may still need a lifter or two-person handling.
Can you replace a heavy or waterlogged spa cover?
Yes. A conventional foam cover that has absorbed water becomes difficult to lift and loses insulation performance. Protected Pools can review the spa dimensions and recommend a replacement, including foam-free Airframe options that are designed not to gain water weight.
Do spa covers reduce heating costs?
Yes. A properly fitted cover limits evaporation and heat loss from the water surface, which reduces heater run time. Insulation performance depends on the cover design, fit, condition and how consistently it is used. Owners should replace damaged, saturated or poorly fitting covers.
Do you make covers for swim spas and cold plunges?
Yes, depending on size, shape and installation conditions. Swim spas and cold plunges may use automatic, rolling, sectional or custom manual covers. Because long spans and frequent access affect usability, Protected Pools reviews how the owner intends to operate the cover before recommending a system.

Specialty Systems

6 questions

S-Lide, S-Roll and how to compare cover systems against each other.

S-Lide Sliding Deck

What is an S-Lide sliding deck pool cover?
S-Lide is a motorized sliding deck that moves over the pool and converts the covered area into usable outdoor space. Its aluminum structure can accept compatible deck finishes supplied as part of the overall project design. It is especially attractive for compact yards, plunge pools and projects where usable deck area is a priority.
Can people or furniture be placed on S-Lide?
S-Lide is engineered as a load-supporting sliding deck and can be designed for people and outdoor furniture when closed. Load limits, finish weight, support conditions and operating rules depend on the engineered configuration. Owners must confirm those requirements in the project documents before using the deck.
How much space does a sliding deck cover require?
The deck needs a clear area into which it can retract, and that space can be substantial. Configuration options may include one-piece, split or telescoping arrangements depending on the project. Pool size, travel direction, surrounding features and structural support determine whether the site is suitable.

S-Roll & Choosing a System

What is an S-Roll slatted pool cover?
S-Roll is a floating slatted cover that rolls onto a concealed or visible reel. It provides a clean modern appearance and helps reduce evaporation, heat loss and debris. Because slatted systems float on the water, their safety classification and load behavior differ from a tensioned ASTM safety cover.
Is every motorized pool cover an ASTM safety cover?
No. Motorized operation does not automatically make a product an ASTM F1346 safety cover. Traditional automatic safety covers and documented Coverseal configurations may meet the standard, while slatted covers and certain sliding-deck products use different designs and classifications. The website should identify each product accurately and never apply a safety certification across the entire product line.
Which pool-cover system is right for my project?
Choose based on the pool's age and shape, safety requirements, desired appearance, available deck space, budget and daily-use expectations. New pools often favor a hidden Cover-Pools system; existing or freeform pools may favor Coverseal; space-focused projects may suit S-Lide; and energy or design priorities may point to a slatted system. Protected Pools reviews the project before recommending one.
